DJ Woody Biography
One of Mixmaster Mike ’s (Beastie Boys) favourite DJs, described as ’The best DJ in the World’ by Hudson Mohawke, labelled a genius by DJ Qbert. 2 Times World Champion DJ, Woody is arguably one of the UK’s most influential turntablists. Known for his innovations, he helped design the Worlds first ever musical turntable instrument (Vestax Controller One) and is famed as a prolific pioneer of new scratch techniques.
Woody’s musical approach to the turntable and has led to mixtapes and recordings for labels including NinjaTunes, BBE, Jazz Fudge, Tokyo Dawn, Chopped Hearing, Passenger, Twisted Nerve & Jack 2 Phono Records. He was DJ for Grammy winning hip hop star Mala Rodriguez (Universal), has written scratch music for a 25 piece big band jazz orchestra and as long time associate of DJ Vadim, was a band member of The Russian Percussian and One Self. In the last 10 years Woody has played to crowds of up to 40,000 and performed in over 40 countries in venues as diverse as The Nokia Theatre in Time Square to a Bollywood film studio in the middle of Mumbai.
In 2010 Woody extended his repertoire in the form of his ground breaking audio-visual DJ show, ’Turntables In Technicolor’.
Designing and animating all the material himself, Woody immediately made his mark on the AV and DJ scene following jaw
dropping showcase performances at the 2010 World DMC Finals and the US DMC Finals in New York. These performances led to
DMC’s decision to run the first ever Video DJ Championships. His latest ‘History of Hip Hop’ AV set was described by Jurassic 5’s
Cut Chemist in 2018 as "The best video DJ set i’ve ever seen!". 2015 saw Woody make another first by taking his brand of audio-visual-turntablism to the theatre, premiering ’Blake Remixed’ at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe. In this collaboration with UK beatboxer/rapper/actor Testament, Woody created a live soundtrack via the turntables whilst playing ‘puppet-master’ over interactive 3d projection mapped characters, enabling the DJ turntables to
become part of the storytelling experience. In 2016 Woody’s production skills came to the fore. As BocaWoody, his collaboration with Bristolian beatmaker Boca45, he
released a 6 track ‘NW/SW’ EP and 7”. Six months later Woody released his debut solo LP ’The Point Of Contact’, featurning some of the UK’s finest musical talent including Christian Madden (Liam Gallagher), Carl Sharrocks (808 State) and Nick Blacka (Gogo Penguin). The album prompted comparisons to the work of RJD2 and DJ Shadow. The live act includes drums (Sharrocks) and keyboards (Madden) and debuted to a full house at the DMC World Finals at the 02 Kentish Town Forum in London. 2017 saw the release of the full length album “Carousel” by BocaWoody. Described as “Super feel-good funky hip hop exuberance!” by Cold Cut’s Jon Moore, the single ‘Jump’ featuring BluRum13 recieved radio support from Craig Charles, Huey Morgan and Steve Lamacq and featured on BBC Radio 6 music Recommends playlist.
In 2017 Woody also became the official warm up DJ for the iconic
Hacienda Classical live shows featuring Manchester musical royalty Peter Hook, Mike Pickering and Graham Park. Playing sold out arena‘s across the UK, the 2018 tour culminating in Woody performing a solo set to a packed crowd at the legendary
Royal Albert Hall. 45 Live announced Woody as the latest member of the World renowned crew of 45rpm vinyl DJ’s. Joining the likes of DJ Format, Andy Smith, Marc Hype, Mr Thing, DJ Food and Boca 45 to rip up dancefloors armed with his stacks of wax.
In 2018 Woody continued to perform vinyl 45’s sets, scratch showcases and AV shows around the globe whilst also finding time to record 2 mixes for 45 Live Radio, release 6 records and an EP on his Woodwurk Records imprint, record a bunch of scratch routine videos and get music syncs for VICE TV
